Mathieu van der Poel retook the lead in the Tour of Britain after placing sixth in Thursday’s time trial, a stage that saw Edoardo Affini claim the biggest victory of his career to date.
Van der Poel placed sixth on the stage in Worcestershire to retake the green jersey from Affini’s team-mate Matteo Trentin.
With just two days of this year’s race remaining, van der Poel leads Trentin by just six seconds. Team Ineos rider Pavel Sivakov sits third overall, 24 seconds in arrears.
Having been the 12th rider to start the stage, Affini posted a time of 16’39” for the 14.4-kilometre course. He eventually beat nearest challenger Sebastian Langeveld (EF Education First) by seven seconds.
