Tour de France took a dramatic turn on stage 3 when Jasper Philipsen was forced to abandon the race following a brutal crash during the intermediate sprint.

The Belgian rider, who started the day wearing the green jersey as the points classification leader, was vying for additional sprint points in Isbergues when disaster struck. In a chaotic moment, Cofidis rider Bryan Coquard collided with Intermarché-Wanty’s Laurenz Rex, veering into Philipsen’s path. The Belgian had no time to react, crashing heavily at nearly 60 km/h and landing hard on his right side.

His green jersey was left in tatters, and he was visibly in pain as race doctors attended to him, fitting his arm in a sling.Medical evaluations confirmed the severity of the crash, with Alpecin-Deceuninck reporting a displaced fracture of Philipsen’s right collarbone and at least one broken rib, possibly two.

The 27-year-old was transferred to a hospital in Herentals, Belgium, where he is set to undergo surgery.

The crash was a devastating blow for Alpecin-Deceuninck, who had celebrated Philipsen’s stage 1 victory and yellow jersey stint, followed by teammate Mathieu van der Poel’s stage 2 win.
