The Irishman easily concluded the work of his team-mates to beat Danny van Poppel (Intermarché-Wanty) and Jon Aberasturi (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA).
“I’m pretty happy,” said Bennett at the finish. “I didn’t know how good the legs were going to be coming into this race after a short break. I was on the limit today, but the team did an incredible job. Even when they came down in crashes, they adapted to the situation and were able to do a fantastic job.”
On Thursday, the second stage of the Portuguese race will see the peloton taken from Sagres to Alto da Foia. After 182.8 kilometers, the victory will be decided on top of a first category climb, 7.7 km long at 5.8 percent average.
