Elite High-cost riders
Those the men that are expected to lead a GC bid for their team. They are usually the most expensive one but some cheeky choices may be made here.
ALEJANDRO VALVERDE | Movistar | The godfather of the peloton is definitely not going to play second role in his last Giro. A top 10 and probably a stage victory is be expected.
JOAO ALMEIDA | UAE Team Emirates | Back in 2020, the Portuguese announced himself to the world. He confirmed last year with a 6th place on general standings by making a thunderous come-back. It is worthy to be noted that in addition to working for remco in the opening stages of last year Giro’s Joao also had some bad days. His transfer to UAE will make a podium finish possible.
GIULIO CICCONE | Trek-Segafredo | Large responsibilities lie on his shoulder. He had to abandon both of his last grand tours after showing promise to finish in the top 10. Baring any crash to which he is high prone, he will be a candidate to the podium.
SIMON YATES | BikeExchange | He had an impressive time trial against some serious men. A favourite for the overall victory but doubt still arise when it concerns being constant.
ROMAIN BARDET | Team DSM | The Frenchman has shown some form recently that could land him a podium.
RICHARD CARAPAZ | Ineos Grenadiers | The man from high altitude is a very reliable and consistent rider in grand tours. The favourite for the overall win.
PELLO BILBAO | Bahrain Victorious | In great form with 3rd at UAE Tour, 9th in Tirreno-Adriatico, 5th in Itzulia, 4th in Alps including a stage win. He will not be on domestique duties for once. No one can match his descending skill and this could be quite good enough for a top 5.
MIKEL LANDA | Bahrain Victorious | 3rd In Tirreno-Adriatico and can climb well and not many time trial kilometers in this year’s Giro. He will share leadership with Pello Bilbao.
TOBIAS FOSS | Jumbo-Visma | An expert time-trialist whose climbing abilities are improving. He should be Jumbo-Visma main man and finish in the top 10 again this year.
DOMENICO POZZOVIVO | Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert | The 39-year-old Italian will try to finish in the top 10 and his recent form and his experience show that he might do just that.
WILCO KELDERMANN | Bora-hansgrohe | Always consistent in grand tours with the last 3 he has raced placing in the top 10 and 3rd in 2020 Giro.
JAI HINDLEY | Bora-hansgrohe | 5th At Tirreno, he Has recently shown some of the form that landed him a 2nd place in 2020. |
Mid range riders
Those include climbers, stage winners and jersey classifications contenders. Usually priced a mid value, and expected to bring an average total of points over the 3 weeks.
IVAN SOSA | Movistar | An excellent climber who might try to snatch a stage victory depending on how much freedom he will be given from Valverde. |
MARK CAVENDISH | Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl | Last time, he started a grand tour, he was a big gamble that paid out big. Morkov is here and there are a minimum of 4 stages that will favour a bunch sprint. |
CEES BOL/ ALBERTO DAINESE | Team DSM | It will be difficult to predict which one of the two will be their team’s main sprinter. |
ARNAUD DÉMARE | Groupama-FDJ | One of the top sprinter, but no win yet this year. He has brought his cycling train to Italy for the ciclamino jersey fight |
ANDREA VENDRAME | AG2R-Citroën | Good punchy rider that has had several top 10 this season |
LILIAN CALMEJANE | AG2R-Citroën | Was in a few breakaways at la Vuelta and should expect the same at the Giro |
GUILLAUME MARTIN | Cofidis | 9th at Paris-Nice and 8th at Volta a Catalunya, lots of climbing and not much time trial |
SIMONE CONSONNI | Cofidis | A good sprinter who can tt well. He would love to wear the pink. |
DAVIDE CIMOLAI | Cofidis | If Consonni pulls out at any stage Cimolai will lead his team sprints. Finished 4th in the final stage of Tirreno |
RICHIE PORTE | Ineos Grenadiers | How much freedom will the Autralian be given in his last grand tour? Not much. He recently finished 4th at Tirreno and 7th in the Tour of the Alps |
PAVEL SIVAKOV | Ineos Grenadiers | He finished 9th in Valencia, 10th in the Alps and 9th in the 2019 Giro. He still seems to be lacking something to be considered among the very best but he is a major asset to his team |
BEN TULETT | Ineos Grenadiers | Yet another promising rider from ineos. He finished 2nd of the Coppi e Vartali. If given freedom, he could go for breakaways. |
MATHIEU VAN DE POEL | Alpecin-Fenix | The power horse could definitely win one if not more stages. Will be aiming for the maglia rosa in the first week. However it is uncertain if he will ride the full Giro as he is planning to go the Tour de France as well. |
WOUT POELS | Bahrain Victorious | Came 9th and 10th in last 2 stages of Paris-Nice and was 6th in Catalunya before pulling out of the race. He will be aiming for the mountain classifications |
GIRMAY BINIAM | Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert | The 22 years old Erythrean is the new cycling sensation. He is one of the best sprinters at the moment and could win some stage with his qualities and could target the best sprinter’s jersey. |
GIANCOMO NIZZOLO | Israel-Premier Tech | Won a stage and 2 2nd place stage finishes last year |
Safe bargains
Break-aways and stage chasers usually form part of this group. Very young talents who have all but confirmed their talents this year are also here. The guys will not cost you much and will definitely bring you more points per value than any other riders.
PHIL BAUHAUS | Bahrain Victorious | 4th in Eschborn-Frankfurt , won stage in Tirreno and two 2nd places in Catalunya. He will be in the finale of many stages. |
EDWARD THEUNS | Trek-Segafredo | A stage victory might be a long shot. But he will be his team’s main sprinter and he could get over some tricky stages climbs. |
ATTILA VALTER | Groupama-FDJ | The 23 years old hungarian guy is progressing, as seen at Tour of the Alps and Strade Bianche |
LENNARD KAMNA | Bora-hansgrohe | Won a stage in the tour of the alps from the breakaway and another contender for the KOM jersey |
JAN TRATNIK | Bahrain Victorious | Should get a good result in the 2 time trials and could get in a few breakaways |
VINCENZO ALBANESE | Eolo-Kometa | A good punchy sprinter that can climb fairly. He will also be in the breakaway often |
LORENZO FORTUNATO | Eolo-Kometa | His name is forever associated with the zocolan but can the climber repeat his feat? |
FELIX GALL | AG2R-Citroën | In good form with a 12th in Itzulia & 6th in the Tour of the Alps, possible king of the mountain contender |

Lastly here are included of type of riders. Investing in those guys could go both ways. Daring to choose them could either bring a pretty decent gold that not a lot more will have or nothing!
ALESSANDRO DE MARCHI | Israel-Premier Tech | Can attack and go in breakaways, good time trial rider and wore pink jersey for 2 stages |
MATIAS SKJELMOSE JENSEN | Trek-Segafredo | The young dane is a future GC leader being a good climber and good time trialist. But will he be given freedom for a multiple spear Trek-Segafredo? |
JUAN PEDRO LOPEZ | Trek-Segafredo | His performance at Itzulia and last Vuelta show that he is going to be the great rider his mentor, Alberto Contador expected him to be. |
THYMEN ARENSMAN | Team DSM | Also, had an impressive tour de alps. A top 10 finish is more than possible but he will firstly support Bardet’s bid for podium. |

VINCENZO NIBALI | Astana | Good Giro di Sicilia, finishing 4 in general classification. At 37, he is way past his best. A stage victory at best. |
MIGUEL ANGEL LOPEZ | Astana | Superman is a bit disappointing. His best season was 2018. Long time he has not been impressive. Let’s see if he can win a stage or two, may be a top 10 in GC. |
