Geraint Thomas crashed in the neutralised zone of stage 3 of the Giro d’Italia as he was taken down by a stray water bottle.
The injuries picked up in the incident were worse than first feared as the INEOS Grenadiers leader cracked on the shallow gradients at the base of Mount Etna. Thomas finished the day 12:19 down on stage winner Jonathan Caicedo.
