Primoz Roglic won the prestigious Vélo d’Or, prize created in 1992 and awarded by the French cycling magazine Vélo.

The Slovenian from Jumbo-Visma was voted the best rider of 2020 by the international cycling journalists.

Primoz Roglic and Tadej Pogacar were the favorites for the prize beforehand and unlike in the Tour de France, Roglic now defeated his younger compatriot.

The Jumbo-Visma rider defended his title at the Vuelta a Espana with four stage wins in 2020. He also was second in the Tour, won the Tour de l’Ain as well as his first monument at Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

“I went through the list of previous winners and saw it’s really an important award,” Roglič told L’Equipe, when the winners were announced. “I want to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to the people who voted for me. I understood that it was a jury of journalists from all over the world, that’s why it really touches me.”

Last year’s winner Julian Alaphilippe won the top prize for the best French rider, the Vélo d’Or Français.
