Hayter, who also won the prologue on Tuesday, edged out Ion Aberasturi and Fernando Gaviria at the end of the 168km ride in Echallens.

“We knew [the stage victory] was possible but I didn’t know how I’d be after [the crash] yesterday. I rode my way into the stage and the team were amazing today. It’s probably my nicest win – they took it on and we were in position to take the race on like that. To finish it off with a win is amazing.

Rohan Dennis holds a 14-second advantage over second-placed Felix Grossschartner in the general classification.

The third stage on Friday is a 165.1km ride starting and finishing in Valbroye.
