Egan Bernal crashed out of contention in the closing stages of Clasica San Sebastian and has been taken to hospital for checks.

The young Colombian was stretchered away from the scene of the multi-rider crash, which took place in Donostia with 20 kilometres to go.

Bernal suffered a serious facial trauma. He is awake and talking. He has had a precautionary scan to assess for further injuries which revealed a nasal fracture and maxillary injury.

He will be assessed by maxillofacial specialists and will be staying overnight for observation and further treatment.

Bernal and his teammates were sitting prominently in the peloton ahead of the final climb of the 228.7km event. Team Sky had helped to shut down attacks on the second pass over the Arkale climb, with the race set to be decided on the final Murgil Tontorra ascent.

That proved to be the case, with Julian Alaphilippe (Quick-Step Floors) and Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) pushing clear on the short, sharp 1.8km ramp.

At the line it was Alaphilippe who used his kick to win the two-up sprint, with Anthony Roux (Groupama-FDJ) rounding out the podium from a select group 16 seconds later.
