German rider Max Walscheid (Giant-Alpecin) thought he had the win in the bag at the Tour of Hainan, in China, and threw his arms up in celebration.

However, Walscheid was passed by Rafael Andriato (Wilier – Southeast) in the final meters in what will remain in the history of cycling as another “too early celebration”.

“After good teamwork getting Max to the front for the sprint, he was in a winning position but celebrated too early and finished second. It’s a missed chance but there will be more opportunities in the coming days.”
